Growing Into A Mature Relationship With Christ

What We Believe

This We Believe . . . This We Proclaim

About God
God is the creator and Ruler of the universe.
He is the Father of Jesus Christ.
He is our Father and will provide all the needs of our bodies and souls.
He is present everywhere.

About Jesus Christ
Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of God.
He gave His life as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of the world.
He arose from the dead and is alive forevermore.
He is King of Kings and will be victorious over all evil.
He is the only way to God. "
Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through Me'" (John 14:6).

About Humankind
Man is by nature sinful and cannot make himself good. "For all have sinned and fallen short of God's glorious ideal" (Romans 3:23).
He can only be made righteous by accepting God's forgiveness for sin through Jesus' sacrifice on the cross.
He will be given a new life because of his relationship to Jesus.
"He died for our sins and rose again to make us right with God, filling us with God's goodness" (Romans 4:25).

About the Bible
The Bible is the infallible word of God.
It is our only guide to show us what we should believe and how we should live.
It is for everyone to read so that all may hear God speak to their hearts and minds.

About the Church . . . The Family of God
There is but one universal church, made up of people of every race who believe in Jesus Christ, regardless of denominational affiliation.
Jesus Christ is the head of the church and the members are His body.
As the body of Christ our task is to carry out the work He began; to make Jesus known to the whole world.
"Now you are no longer strangers to God and foreigners to heaven, but you are members of God's very own family, citizens of God's country, ad you belong to God's household with every other Christian" (Eph. 2:19).

About Membership In The Church
We believe that membership in the universal church comes through a personal relationship to Jesus Christ.
A person is born into the church through spiritual rebirth.
We believe only God can place you as a member in His church.
"Jesus replied with all the earnestness I possess I tell you this; 'Unless you are born again, you never can get into the Kingdom of God'" (John 3:3).

About Identification with the Decatur Church of God
It is vital that each Christian take his or her stand with a local congregation of the church.
Christians who have been a part of another church fellowship are encouraged to identify with our church in the following ways

  1. Participate in a Welcome Class of beliefs and teaching of the Decatur Church of God.
  2. Indicate to the senior pastor in writing or in specific personal conversation a desire and commitment to participate faithfully in the life of this local church.
  3. Each person is encouraged to identify with our church on the basis of a personal faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord and not simply as a means of "joining a religious group."

About the Unity Of All Christians
We believe in the fellowship of all Christians.
"Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond or peace.  There is one body and one Spirit just as you were called to one hope when you were called, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all" (Eph. 4:3-6).

Jesus prayed; "That they all may be one; as thou Father art in Me and I in thee, that they also may be one in us, so that the world may believe that Thou has sent Me" (John 17:21).

About The Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is co-equal with the Father and the son, three Persons in the Trinity.
He is "the other Comforter," who dwells in the hearts of men, convincing them of the truth of Christ's teachings and helping them to do right.  John 14:16, 17, 25, 26.

The Holy Spirit's presence is the guarantee of our relationship with God, the source of Christian unity.
"For His Holy Spirit speaks to us deep within our hearts and tells us that we really are God's children" (Romans 8:16).

The Holy Spirit cleanses the attitudes, mindset, habits and spirit of the believer for the purpose of setting apart the believer for God's use.

The most convincing evidence of the Holy Spirit in one's life is holiness unto the Lord.

About The Ordinances
We celebrate three ordinances instituted by Christ in the New Testament.
They are, Water Baptism of believers in Christ, the Holy Supper or Communion, and Foot Washing.
